A Fortnightly Newsletter for St. Andrew's Parents

(See links to updated St. Andrew’s news stories below.)

October 7, 2005

Dear Parents,

Many of you will see your children this weekend, our first Long Weekend of the school year. I hope you will have some time to ask your children about the opening weeks of school—about their classes, conversations with faculty, dorm life, experiences in the arts and other co-curricular activities.

Over the next 10 days, you will receive a letter from your child’s advisor along with a full set of comments from your child’s teachers. Although it is early in the year, we send these comments to you so that we can all prepare for conferences on Parents Weekend. In some of your child’s comments there may appear a list of assessments with grades. I hope you will not focus as much on these as the comments faculty are sending, reflecting on your child’s work habits, curiosity, class participation and attitude. It is in these comments that you will find how your child is doing academically and guidance for how they should approach their work in their classes throughout the year. Each teacher is looking forward to discussing their thoughts with you further at a conference on Parents Weekend.

I also want to make all parents aware of two trips that will be taking place over our spring break this year. One trip, organized by parents Suresh and Nita Tata P’07, will take students and faculty to India for two weeks. This trip is much more than a tourist’s view of the nation and culture of India—the Tatas have planned a detailed itinerary including noted political and cultural figures in India’s museums, universities and government. I hope a great many St. Andrew’s students will be able to take part in this unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn about one of the world’s great cultures. Links to information about the trip appear directly below. Please e-mail Lisa Henson in the headmaster’s office (lhenson@standrews-de.org) if you are interested in taking advantage of this opportunity.

Another spring-break trip is organized by Kevin Schroedter and other members of our modern languages department, and will take students and faculty to Spain and France. This trip will offer unparalleled opportunities to experience two countries and cultures in Europe. I hope you will discuss these opportunities for travel with your children while they are home over the Long Weekend. As always, please feel free to contact me any time if you have questions about the School or your child. Thank you so much.

Sincerely,

Tad Roach
