Dear Parents,

All of us at St. Andrew's send you and your families warm wishes for a great Thanksgiving holiday.  Tonight, we will mark the end of the fall season with a special Thanksgiving Chapel and dinner followed by student recitals in the Engelhard Performance Hall.  This evening marks the end of a particularly good and energetic fall term.  In so many ways, I am proud of the culture, spirit and energy of the School community.

This past week, we encountered an unusual situation on campus-a temporary employee, hired to help manage our housekeeping responsibilities during a time when staff illnesses left us short handed, was suspected of taking two student computers.  Students brought these suspicions and observations to me by noon on Tuesday, and by 3 p.m. the computers were recovered and the temporary employee was under the supervision of local police.  As a result of this situation, the School will not use temporary employees at any time.  We want to be sure that we have a clear and complete relationship with any person who works on behalf of the School.

As you talk to your sons and daughters over the break, I encourage you to talk about two specific topics:

  • Recent research suggests that students' intellectual and psychological lives are enhanced and strengthened when they participate in up to 20 hours of extracurricular work or play a week.  These commitments may take the form of athletic, community service or artistic participation.  The important point here is that, especially in the winter, students need structure, commitments and a spirit of engagement.  Please ask your child how he/she will engage in the life and opportunities of the School this winter.

  • Because we are working hard to promote a life at St. Andrew's free of alcohol and drugs, it is important for you to set the highest expectations possible for your children during the break.  The research is clear-students who refrain from using alcohol or drugs until age 18 dramatically reduce their vulnerability to alcohol/drug problems in their adult lives.   Vacation alcohol/drug use is just as detrimental to your child's health and well being as use during School.

We look forward to seeing you all on campus during the holiday season.

Sincerely,

Tad Roach

Did you know that the full St. Andrew's tuition of $33,000 falls more than $17,000 short of the actual cost of a St. Andrew's education? This year, St. Andrew's will spend over $50,000 to educate each child on our campus. We hope you will consider a gift to St. Andrew's Annual Fund to show your support for a great school.
