December 15, 2005

Dear Parents,

By the time you receive this e-mail, your sons and daughters will be on their way home for vacation.  All of us at St. Andrew’s wish you and your families a peaceful and joyous holiday season.

In this December letter, I wanted to share a few personal recommendations for your holiday reading list.  As a Headmaster and English teacher, I look for books everywhere:  in book stores, through The New York Review of Books, The New Yorker, The New York Times, Commonweal magazine, The Atlantic, Harpers, through conversations with teachers, professors, parents and friends.  I hope you will respond to my list with recommendations of your own, and I hope you will ask your sons and daughters for their own list of great texts they have read this fall.

  1. “The March,” E. L. Doctorow – a new novel on the Civil War
  2. “Equity and Excellence,” William Bowen, Martin A. Kurzweil, Eugene M. Tobin and Susanne C. Pichler – an analytical study of socio-economic inequality in college admissions
  3. “Declining by Degrees,” Richard H. Hersh and John Merrow, Editors – a collection of essays describing the crisis in liberal arts colleges
  4. “In Revere, In Those Days,” Roland Merullo – a moving novel about a family, a son and boarding school
  5. “Season of Life,” Jeffrey Marx – a great portrait of a coach and an approach to the education of boys
  6. Gilead,” Marilynne Robinson – a novel exploring the life of an aging parent, husband and minister
  7. “The Seven Basic Plots – Why We Tell Stories,” Christopher Booker – a comprehensive portrait of literature’s most fundamental paradigms
  8. “The Shame of the Nation:  The Restoration of Apartheid Schooling in America,” Jonathan Kozol – a disturbing portrait of America’s refusal to integrate
  9. “Binge:  What Your College Student Won’t Tell You “– a report from the inner life of the colleges

Thank you for your work on the parent survey this fall.  As part of the self-study process, we have developed important and valuable perspectives on the School from our alumni, parents, faculty, staff and students.  We will use our surveys to study the School and its programs and culture and to develop new initiatives and priorities. Please click here to read a document detailing the results of the parent survey. Please know how much I appreciate your input in this process.

I hope your children convey to you a sense of the excitement and joy of the School in the last weeks as we headed into the winter break. Please be sure to take a look at the pictures and stories in the news section of our parent Web site, highlighted in the links below. I look forward to seeing you in the New Year.

Sincerely,

Tad Roach
